Custom Hostel Front Desk Software →
This is a thread about bbdezine23’s custom front desk software.
For more background information, please see the original hostel front desk software thread.
I haven’t seen the software personally so this is not an endorsement one way or the other — I am just posting the screenshots that were emailed to me:
attracting investment →
i guess this is the big question for those of us looking to start our own hostel. the money.
now, obviously the amount needed is going to vary from hostel to hostel, place to place but at the end of the day somebody’s gotta pay for the whole operation and i was wondering how people went about convincing the bank, or investors (or something else) to hand over the dough?

Has anyone heard of Bluefish Hostels?
Their press releases say that they have 5 hostels in North America, but I can’t find them online.

“Bluefish Hostels has launched their new website bluefish.com Visitors to the site can learn more about locations and amenities, reserve beds and even explore new cities.

The main header on the page says “Search & Book Hotels” (not hostels).
Here is a screenshot showing how their links all point to hotel listings (not hostels):
Here is the text from their featured hotels — doesn’t seem to be focused on hostels:

Will Alcohol Ruin the Hostel Experience? →
A recent news story in the Guardian wonders if alcohol will ruin the hostel experience. I haven’t been to UK hostels, so can’t comment on it, but what do people think?
Here is the story:
“The YHA has just been given the go-ahead to serve alcohol 24 hours a day in its hostels. But most walkers head for the hills to escape this sort of thing, says Kevin Rushby

Requirements for an Access Software →
Hi everybody!
I would like to find out about the requirements for a youth hostel internet access system. I have written a program for the youth hostel in Plakias, Crete, which I would like to make available more widely to youth hostels elsewhere and would like to know whether the system as it stands fulfills more general requirements or what I would need to change.
The system I wrote for...

Most Expensive Hostels in the World →
Hostels are getting more expensive. What are the most expensive hostels in the world?
The most expensive one that I’ve seen is a hostel called Clair Tappaan Lodge in Lake Tahoe, California, with dorm beds currently starting at USD $60/night on Hostelbookers: http://www.sierraclub.org/outings/lodges/ctl/
Here is a photo of one of the dorm rooms:...

Hostel Videos →
I’m interested in listing examples of hostels that are using online video to promote themselves. Anyone using video to promote their hostel(s) online?
The best example I’ve seen is from Wombats Hostels (but the videos appear to be temporarily offline).
Here is an example of a hostel chain (Equity Point) using YouTube to showcase their properties: Happy Hostel in Belgrade:
